The True Disciple of Christ

September 1, 2013
    The Apostle John was not one to mince words. In fact, Jesus had occasion to rebuke him when his temper would flare like lightening and he would thunder condemnation upon those who dishonored the Lord. For this reason Jesus nicknamed him Son of Thunder.

    In his gospel account John methodically presents Jesus own definition of a true and genuine disciple, dismantling the self-deceiving excuses of the carnal Christian. Through his account of Christ’s teaching John is faithful to remind believers what following Christ actually looks like, and challenges us to examine ourselves whether we are truly “in the Faith!” (2 Cor. 13:5)

    John quotes the Master thrice in defining His disciples: First, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.” (8:31) Then, “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (13:35) And finally, “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” (15:8) Herein the Apostle plainly delineates the requisites of authentic discipleship. A true-blue follower of Christ will know and obey His Word, this proved by the love of Jesus flowing forth from his life, and manifested ultimately through the fruit of the Holy Spirit in his life. The genuine believer obeys God, loves God, and brings glory to God; for this kind of life reflects the life of the Son, who ever and completely obeyed the Father, loved the Father, and sought to bring glory to the Father.

    The Lord Jesus knows nothing of a disciple who does not follow Him. He does not know a disciple who neglects his church, who is apathetic towards God’s people, and who quenches the work of the Holy Spirit. He would no doubt denounce such as Hosea did: “You have plowed in wickedness…reaped iniquity…eaten the fruit of lies…[trusting] your own way.” (Hos. 10:13) Yet His call to them would be just as gracious as the prophet’s: “Sow for yourselves righteousness; Reap in mercy; Break up your fallow ground, For it is time to seek the Lord, Till He comes and rains righteousness on you.” (10:12)

    So the test is set before every professing believer: are you obedient? Are you loving? Are you living a fruitful life? Upon examination can you show the credentials of your faith? If not, get on your knees and repent! Jesus knocks at the door of your heart even now. It is time to seek the Lord!

One Life To Live For Christ

August 25, 2013
    “Two little lines I heard one day,
    Traveling along life’s busy way;
    Bringing conviction to my heart,
    And from my mind would not depart;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
    Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    Only one life, yes only one,
    Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
    Then, in ‘that day’ my Lord to meet,
    And stand before His Judgement seat;
    Only one life,’twill soon be past,
    Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    Only one life, ...

Alive From The Dead

August 25, 2013
    In the Book of Romans the Apostle Paul presents a great treatise on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He explains our need for the gospel, and then exhorts believers to live by the gospel. Once we have put our faith in the Lord Jesus, we are called to bring glory to Him through our lives. We have been freed from the bonds of sin and death and we are now given spiritual liberty to live for righteousness.

    Inspiring Paul, the Holy Spirit commands us in the Church, “Do not present your member...

The Quick And The Dead

August 18, 2013
The 1995 Western “The Quick And The Dead” had the tagline: In this town you’re either one or the other. The story revolved around a quick-draw competition, and took its title from the King James Version of the New Testament. The old English word “quick” means alive or living, and for the film was used as a play on words: the quickest man will be the one left standing. To be quick is to be alive!

    In 1 Peter 4, the Apostle admonishes those who put this world before the Kingdom of G...

The Living Dead

August 11, 2013
    In his first letter to his dear son in the faith Timothy, the aged apostle Paul counseled the young pastor to warn his congregation of straying into a materialistic and worldly life. In a graphic statement he strongly asserted that a person who professes Christ but lives for pleasure is dead while they live! (5:6) Indeed, the Church is filled with people who are dead to Christ and alive to sin, though they are called to be dead to sin and alive to Christ. (Rom. 6:11) Thus, the living dead...

The Walking Dead

    The popular TV show “The Walking Dead” is about survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Their lives are ever in danger from monstrous cannibals, and lead character Rick Grimes does his best to keep his friends and family safe. In one episode, an older Christian man named Hershel begins to lose hope. Rick chides him for giving into fear, telling him strongly, “You're a man of God. Have some faith!”

    In 1838 missionary James Calvert set sail for Fiji, determined to share the gospel wit...

This Is My Story

July 27, 2013
When Francis Jane Crosby was only six weeks old, she was taken to a doctor to treat an inflammation in her eyes caused by a cold. The regular physician was out of town, and the substitute gave little Fanny’s parents a faulty treatment that blinded the child within days. She was blind for the rest of her life. That first tragedy was followed by others. Her father died when Fanny was just a year old, and her mother had to hire herself out as a maid to provide for the family. Fanny was able to...

The Doorway To The Kingdom

July 27, 2013
Beware of thinking of our Lord as only a teacher. If Jesus Christ is only a teacher, then all He can do is frustrate me by setting a standard before me I cannot attain. What is the point of presenting me with such a lofty ideal if I cannot possibly come close to reaching it? I would be happier if I never knew it. What good is there in telling me to be what I can never be— to be “pure in heart” (Matthew 5:8), to do more than my duty, or to be completely devoted to God? I must know Jesus ...

The Self Seeking Church

July 14, 2013
. . . till we all come . . . to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ . . . —Ephesians 4:13

Reconciliation means the restoring of the relationship between the entire human race and God, putting it back to what God designed it to be. This is what Jesus Christ did in redemption. The church ceases to be spiritual when it becomes self-seeking, only interested in the development of its own organization. The reconciliation of the human race according to His plan means realizing Him ...

Dependence Day!

July 2, 2013
Happy 4th of July! This week we celebrate the 237th anniversary of the independence of these United States of America. Our independence from foreign rule has brought us great freedom and liberty. As Christians, may we take this day as an opportunity to celebrate our spiritual freedom from the rule of the god of this age, who continues to blind so many around us, keeping them from the Light of the Gospel. May we be reminded today that our liberty is found in Christ, who said, “If the Son mak...
